On July 2, 1776, the resolution for independence, drafted by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, was adopted by a committee including John Adams and which led to the preparation and signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

During these warm days think back 200 years to the time when our forebears suffered the heat of Philadelphia in a small room in Independence Hall, the windows closed and without the modern comfort of air conditioning, debating and arguing for weeks on end in the struggle to “form a more perfect union.” It was on July 16, 1787, when delegates from twelve of the original thirteen states, Rhode Island not attending, finally agreed on the Great Compromise between the larger and smaller states thus opening the way to the forming of our Constitution under which we have survived as a nation for the past two centuries.
