Last year, 20 people lost their lives on Virginia’s highways over the July 4 period. Two of the 20 were pedestrians, two were riding motorcycles, and nine were determined to be alcohol-related. Only two of the 16 killed who were automobile occupants were wearing seat belts.
During the three-day period, troopers assisted 3,327 stranded or otherwise distressed motorists and arrested or issued summoneses to 6,035 motorists. The summoneses included 3,430 for speeding, 561 for reckless driving, 100 for driving drunk and 1,346 for other hazardous violations.
