Of his quick promotion, Dr. Gangel said, “Obviously, I was surprised with the offer. I was very pleased with the offer. It has been a career goal, my doctoral work was in that direction, and it is something which I have been pursuing.”
Dr. Gangel said that he has not had the time to analyze the division’s situation, and thus cannot offer any analysis of the county’s system, or in what directions he feels it should move forward. The first priority, he said, “will be to get on top of the situation, to assess it clearly.” Before mapping a strategy, he added, he must determine the status of the schools, their staffing, the curriculum and the improvement projects.
Mrs. Massie said that was her understanding as well. “He doesn’t want to make wholesale changes. He wants to make an evaluation first. We’ll let him make his decisions. We’ll work with him.”
“I’m looking forward to my experience here,” Dr. Gangel concluded.
“He’s going to fit in just beautifully,” Mrs. Massie agreed.
Awaiting an assistant
Mrs. Massie said that the board is “awaiting a decision” from an individual who has been offered the post of assistant superintendent.
She explained that the board, consulting with Dr. Gangel, decided that to expedite the process, the county would not readvertise the assistant superintendent’s position. After discussion, a consensus was reached that there would probably not be any additional response to a second advertisement, she said.
Mrs. Massie said that Dr. Gangel evaluated the resumes which were received from the first advertisement, from which he was selected. One other individual from a neighboring district was also interviewed on Dr. Gangel’8 request, she added.
“We have made an offer,” the school board chairman said. “We are waiting for the individual to make a decision.”
