Under Attack!

To the editor

I’m under attack!

At least it feels like that. People wanting information, telephones, directions and bathrooms, mostly ■ bathrooms. Service stations no longer can provide tourists with free bathrooms. In the county this requires running a pump and a good healthy source of water and who will clean the bathroom?

For several years this problem has plagued and interrupted my normal attention to business. I’ve mentioned it to several people and then when Brambles opened up in town, there went my breakfast business and lunch wasn’t anything to write home about — but then it wasn’t very good anyway.

Then I began to realise an advantage — the streams of people down my driveway looking for bathrooms disappeared.

Don’t blink though - Brambles, providing the only public bathroom in town, closed up again and here come the bathroom seekers. I’m tom between understanding their need and being angry that I’m forced into choosing between paying the price of being a big-hearted Bertha or buying into the present ideal of conservatism and just telling myself “they aren’t my problem.” The state of Virginia can’t expect small businesses to enrich Virginia Power at personal loss.
