This saps the public system, taking away students who could be role models and parents who could be strong advocates of quality education, Mrs. Wood said.
To address the first she would promote a pay scale that “shows the county’s appreciation of teachers who stay by rewarding them for experience.” To correct the second, she would work towards an exchange program with Wakefield. “There are good ideas at both schools. I’d like to see the teachers from the two schools meet and share, those ideas. That would be a beginning,” she said, adding that it could be expanded to involve students in cooperative, non-competitive projects.
Mrs. Wood would like to nee the public schools become more of a focal point for the community, with the classrooms used nights for extended education or for entertainment, arts and cultural programs. “The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community has made a good start in that direction.
