Nichols unopposed
in Wakefield
The Rappahannock Board of Supervisors will fill School Board vacancies in Hampton and Wakefield Districts at their meeting July 6, as the four-year terms of Randall Updike and Paul Nichols expire.
At a legally required public hearing two weeks ago, the board heard nominations from the public. In making the appointments, however, the supervisors are not bound to choose from the names put forward at that hearing.
Virginia law allows two methods of selecting School Board members: appointment by the Board of Supervisors, whose members are directly elected, or appointment by a Board of Electoral Trustees who are in turn appointed by the Circuit Court Judge. The state does not now permit direct election of School Board members.
Since the change in Rappahannock seven years ago to appointment by the Board of Supervisors, the practice has been for the representative in whose district the vacancy occurs to formally place a name in nomination. In every case to date, the choice of that supervisor has been endorsed by his fellow board members, either unanimously or by majority vote.
The following profiles are of the candidates who asked at the public hearing to be named as Hampton District’s representative to the School Board. Paul Nichols, the incumbent from Wakefield District, was the single candidate for the vacancy in that district.
