Thousands of Virginia farmers are eligible for a refund of at least $15 for money spent on crude oil between Aug. 17, 1973 and Jan. 27, 1981.

The Virginia Farm Bureau Federation is in the process of distributing application forms to County Farm Bureau Offices to assist farmers in obtaining this money.

The refimd'iS a condition of set< tlement of a suit between the U.S. Department of Energy and a group of energy companies who overcharged customers when oil was under government price controls. The fund contains at least $1.5 billion and is being administered by the DOE.

Farmers nationwide who bought crude oil products during that nineyear period are eligible to get back at least $80 per 100,000 gallons of gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, motor and heating oils, propane or grease used.

Depending on the outcome of another settlement, repayments may reach $150 per 100,000 gallons, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

“Our role is to provide the information to farmers,” said Robert B. Delano, president of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation. “Most farmers who apply could get anywhere from $15 to several thousand dollars back. But there’s really no way of guessing because the refunds will ultimately depend on the size of the operation and the type of commodity produced.”
