Dr. Fairchild recommends guiding play which is the child’s own idea, such as dropping things. Items of varying weight and surface area can be dropped to see which hits the ground first. The child receives a conceptual background of the principle of gravity without boring explanations.
Science activities for young children should help the child develop a positive attitude. flf a child brings a spider home, show interest. Ask where it came from, take a picture of it or find out more information about it.
The activities should also develop observation, communication and classification abilities. Give children rocks, flowers or leaves and they will organize or group them, said Dr. Fairchild. When they finish, continue the activitiy by asking a question or suggesting another way the items can be grouped.
Dr. Fairchild offers the following suggestions for any home or school science program:
• Try to teach children topics that are within their immediate realm of experience.
• Give children time to be the active, curiosity seekers they naturally area. Don’t rush them. Allow them to handle material.
• Let children decide what they want to learn. Make interesting things available, but don’t push them. Chances are the children will discover them and want to learn more.
• Avoid scientific explanations. “Don’t try to explain logically what the child sees magically,” Dr. Fairchild suggested.
