According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s most recent census (1982), there were 48,550 farms in Virginia. More than 32,000 of those farms were 49 acres or smaller, while nearly 5,400 were between 50 and 99 acres.
The census showed 3,210 farms between 100 and 999 acres and 2,400 operations between 200 and 499 acres. In .addition, there were. 687 Virginia farms between 500 and 999 acres and 179 operations with more than a thousand acres.
Based on information supplied by the Virginia Department Agriculture and Consumer Services, state farmers could receive a collective refund of $80,000 for each year of the overcharge, or roughly $720,000 for the entire period, (using a $.0008 per gallon fuel formula).
With the refund form the VFBF is distributing to county offices, a farmer can total all the purchases for each year affected. He must describe how he got his annual totals. However, he can use off-road state fuel tax exemption records, sales receipts, local fuel supplier records or credit card purchase slips, the Farm Bureau said.
A farmer doesn’t have to turn in those receipts with his refund request. But he must have them ready if the DOE asks for proof of purchase.
