After the ferris wheel involved in the accident was inspected Friday morning, Mr. McCarthy said that Mr. Cole offered to remove the ride, and he and Mr. Harrison urged him to do so. Mr. Cole also switched his crews from Flint Hill and another carnival, “to avoid the possibility of any unpleasant situations,” Mr. McCarthy said.
Both Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Seal said that they wished to thank the many bystanders who came to the aid of the children. “I’d like to thank the man — I don’t know who he was but he was wearing an Air Force cap — who got my daughter off, and all the other people,” Mrs. Seal said.
Mrs. Foster added a “thank you” to the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department and the Flint Hill Fire Department. “They were all just super during the whole thing. They wanted to know if there was anything they could do; any way they could help.”
The rest of the carnival went off without a hitch, with large crowds attending both Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday, the carnival’s prizes were awarded. Tina Gohn of Arlington drove home in the grand prize, a 1987 Chevrolet Chevette.
Joe Hall of Flint Hill won the Black Angus heifer, while Tony Green of Front Royal has two season passes to see the Washington Redskins.
A suite of living room furniture went to Mqjor Cowgill, also of Flint Hill, and the Fire Chiefs car decanter went home with Jeffrey Young of Reva.
Louis Moore of Flint Hill was awarded a homemade quilt, and a homemade afghan was presented to Jackie Fadely of Upper Marlboro, Md.
Two additional prizes were also presented: a $100 cash award went to Martha Faulkner of Castleton, and a gift certificate from Trout’s was awarded to Wallace Russell of Luray.
Sheriff Woodward reported that although the Sheriffs Department handled several minor incidents involving fights and vandalism late Saturday evening, there were no major problems at the carnival.
