Rappahannock County’s rescue personnel were honored last week by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Medical Services Council. At its annual dinner, the council recognizes the outstanding rescue effort of the preceding year as its “Call of the Year.” Nominations are taken from each of the five counties served by RREMSC: Rappahannock, Madison, Culpeper, Fauquier and Orange.
Rappahannock received the award for the second straight year. The award was bestowed in recognition of the “outstanding teamwork" of the county’s seven fire and rescue companies during an accident in front of the Farmers’ Co-op on Rt. 211 last July 28.
That accident, involving a Freightliner tractor cab and a passenger van, left two people dead. However, two other adults and three children in the van survived. That was largly due to the efforts of the county’s EMS and fire personnel, according to Polly Powell, who presented the award for the EMS Council. “When there comes a time of crisis, the squads working together to save lives; that is what makes a great call,” she said.
