Mr. Childs indicated that the Search Committee will begin work immediately and emphasized that he felt confident about Democratic chances in the Seventh.
He said, "Jerry Baliles and Mary Sue Terry proved we could carry the Seventh. Since there are so many independent voters here, any Democrat will need independent votes to win, just as any Republican must have them. We must, therefore, find a nominee who can appeal to the broad middle ground of moderate and conservative Virginians and must not go to either extreme.”
Mr. Childs added, "What happened to the Republicans in 1965 was the result of what I believe is their dogmatic fixation on the extreme right and their subsequent rejection of anyone more moderate than the Godwin-Robertson element that seems to control their party. We Democrats must not repeat their mistake.”
Mr. Childs emphasized that the Search Committee is seeking input from all concerned residents of the Seventh District and asked interested individuals to contact a member of the committee.
