The driver of the eastbound Freightliner tractor lost control of his vehicle when he slowed due to other eastbound traffic waiting for a vehicle to turn into the Co-op parking lot. He slid across the center line and struck the westbound van headon, pushing it and his tractor into a deep ditch in front of the Co-op. It came to rest on top of the upsidedown van.
Hubert S. Gilkey and his son Bert, members of the Chester Gap squad, were the first personnel on the scene, happening to pass by in a private car. They realized the seriousness of the accident and radioed the Rappahannock fire and rescue dispatcher to request the assistance of the Pegasus med-evac helicopter from the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Two men riding in the front seat of the van were dead, crushed when the diesel tractor landed on top of the car.
