The Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Medical Services Council, in conjunction with its water safety program, is focusing on making boaters aware of the dangerous practice of drinking and boating.
Like drinking and driving, drinking and boating are a lethal combination. Whatever type of boat is involved, the use of alcohol while boating increases the risk of accident. Statistics show that alcohol is a factor in more than 50 percent of all boating accidents and drownings.
According to the EMS Council, safe boating skills are significantly impaired after only one or two drinks. Again, the analogy to drinking and driving is valid.
