son was treated for a strained neck and spent three days in a brace. Her six-year-old daughter was not hurt, “just shaken up.” “And they gave me something to calm me down,” she added. “They took my blood pressure four hours later - I was still going. I was still hyped up.”
Mrs. Seal said that she went to the hospital later and is now receiving chiropractic treatment for the injury she received when she was struck in the back by the bucket. She was told by her doctor that she had messed up her back “pretty bad,” she said.
Mr. Cole said Friday morning “it was just one of those things.” He added that the injuries were limited to “bumps, bruises and pulled muscles. Nobody was seriously hurt.”
Mrs. Foster agreed with Mrs. Seal that the ride’s operator had behaved callously after the accident. She said that she berated him for his attitude, and asked him, “Do you have children?”
She said he replied, “No, but if I did I wouldn’t put them on that ride.”
At a meeting later in the evening with Mr. Cole, Mrs. Foster said she repeated the operator’s comment to Mr. Cole. She said that he replied that the operator would not have said such a thing, and she challenged him to bring Mr. Nelson in and ask him. She said that Mr. Nelson came into the meeting and admitted that he had indeed made that comment to Mrs. Foster.
Building Inspector Bill Harrison, who serves as the county’s inspector of the carnival rides, said that all the rides were inspected when they were set up and again Friday morning. “There was no mechanical or electrical malfunction,” he said. “As to what happened, your guess is as good as mine.”
John McCarthy, the county’s administrator, who investigated the accident with Mr. Harrison Friday morning, supported the inspector’s conclusion. “I want to emphasize that nothing mechanical or electrical is wrong” with the ride, he said.
Mr. McCarthy theorized that the problem could be the design of the ride, with buckets constructed so that if they were rocked they could become entangled. The ride, he
