Although rescue personnel were able to reach the scene riding in a four-wheel drive vehicle, they could not transport the patient in the truck because of the risk of further injury. Pegasus could not evacuate the patient by air because there was no clearing large enough to land or to lower a Stokes basket.
The evacuation down a steep mountain trail took four hours - through a thunderstorm. During the entire transport, rescue personnel assisted the patient’s breathing and maintained intravenous therapy. Four bottles of oxygen were used and & total of three intravenous lines were inserted.
When the team reached the base of the mountain, Pegasus was waiting to whisk the patient to U. Va. hospital. .
