Alcohol gives the user a kind of mental “one-two punch.” On the one hand, it reduces inhibitions, while at the same time it increases the willingness of most users to take risks. Drinking may lead to inappropriate and foolish actions in dangerous situations. Alcohol also impairs good judgement by diminishing the process of reasoning.
All these, plus the fact that alcohol weakens survival reflexes and increases the effects of cold, are reasons why drinking and boating do not mix.
In some cases, the council reports, alcohol abuse has caused boaters to be so relaxed that, in a sudden spill, they sink to the bottom without even struggling to keep afloat.
The Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Medical Services Council encourages boaters to participate in boating safely by “boating without the bottle.”
