Incumbent Nelson Lane’s “no-show” at the PTA’s education forum Tuesday night prompted Sharon Kilpatrick to declare a write-in candidacy Wednesday morning, making Stonewall-Hawthome the third magisterial district with a contested race for the Board of Supervisors this Nov. 3.
Mrs. Kilpatrick conceded that her late entry makes her the decided underdog. “I’m not expecting to win,” she said, noting the work any write-in candidate must do in order to convince voters not to go the easy route and check off a box but instead draw a box themselves and write in a name. “But I think the people in our district ought to have a way to say W besides tearing up the ballot.”
She acknowledged that her opponent has not been “an absolutely terrible supervisor.” Mr. Lane made a good appointment to the School Board in naming Bll Oliver, Mrs. Kilpatrick said. “And he’s taken the trouble to inform himself on issues like the landfill, but that doesn’t do much good if he doesn’t attend the board meetings,” she added, noting that Mr. Lane frequently foils to show up for even the regular monthly sessions.
