This is in response to a recent letter published in this paper criticizing njy^m^pofl of a state horse center .

In 1985, after over three years of study and consideration of possible sites for a state horse center, Senator Anderson, one of the few remaining solidly conservative Democrats, sponsored a bill that would create the Virginia Equine Center near Lexington. The Lexington site was chosen by unanimous vote of the study committee. There were many reasons for selecting the Lexington site, not the least of which was private donations of over 360 acres of beautiful land along the Maury River, as well as several hundred thousands of dollars in cash donations to start the center.
After years of study, and after hearing absolutely no opposition to the establishment of a state horse center to enhance the horse industry in Virginia, I and 23 other senators joined Senator Anderson as co-sponsors of his bill. The bill was passed by the Agriculture Committee and the full Senate by unanimous vote.
I have yet to hear of any private horse-related activities that will be damaged by planned activities of the Equine Center. If this center, over 120 miles from Culpeper, would be a threat to activities at Commonwealth Park, I should have heard about it. The owner of Commonwealth Park and the board of supervisors of Culpeper County were well aware of the efforts to establish an equine center.
