He added that one of Mr. Chase s colleagues on the Culpeper Board of Supervisors had called Mr. Miller “a long-distance representative.” According to Ruth Updike, Sen. Miller told her he was not aware that there was an equestrian center in Culpeper. That came after the county’s board objected to a bill co-sponsored by Sen. Miller to establish a state-run equestrian center in Lexington.
Mr. Baumgardner said, “His answer to charges by his constituents that he was out of touch in sponsoring a bill to establish a competing equestrian center in Rockbridge County was to charge his constituents with a lack of leadership. In doing that, he attempted to turn the relationship between elected officials and their constituents backwards. I found that incredible.”
Mr. Miller stressed that, as an independent, “I’ve backed Republicans and I’ve supported Democrats. It’s purely a matter of who I feel will best serve the interests of Virginia. I’m voting for Bill Chase, not against Sen. Miller.”
