Next week is National Fire Prevention Week. It’s an annual event, a week when fire departments, contractors and outdoor organizations, among many others, stress the need for the public to be aware of the dangers of fire. That’s a good idea.
But, it’s really more than a one-week reminder. It’s everyone’s responsibility to be aware of the danger of fire every day of the year, no matter where you are.
That cigarette butt, flicked thoughtlessly from the window of a car, could destroy a field or forest. The overloaded extension cord, which you plan to replace next time you get to the store, could be the cause of a devastating house fire. Gasoline, stored improperly where children can reach it, could cause a tragic loss of life.
Most fire prevention is a matter of common sense. But, as is often the case, common sense is really a lot less common than most of us would like to believe. So take a few minutes, sometime next week, to survey your house, and garage, and habits. Fireproofing begins with each individual. Waiting until tomorrow may be too late.
