Joy Turner Luke of Sperryville has been named a 1987 recipient of the American Society for Materials and Testing’s Award of Merit. Mrs. Luke was the chairman of a committee which developed three standards for artists’ supplies and materials.
Mrs. Luke explained that the effort was the first time that meaningful standards for chronic toxicity had been developed for paints and other materials in common use by artists. Chronic, as opposed to acute toxicity, is the “possibility that the material might cause serious disease, such as cancer, after exposure over a long period of time,” Mrs. Luke said.
