"I’m a little concerned also about there being so much swamp adjacent to the site,” he added.
“Generally, there’s a lack of understanding of this groundwater system and how it works,” said Timothy Saylor, engineer with Buchart Horn Inc., the firm that did the engineering for Sperryville’s new sewage treatment plant. “It appears to be a very complex system,” he said, calling for more information on how the fracture traces and the stress from earth-moving operations will affect the groundwater. “Now is the time to spend the money to understand the site,” he said, describing additional studies as “cheap insurance.”
“Is three times enough?”
Ms. Shiff noted that the county has over 2,000 acres in orchards. She reported that she’d asked orchardists how they disposed of the containers for pesticides, herbicides and other agricultural chemicals. “They bum most of the bags the powders come in. The containers for the liquids they either bum or they rinse them three times and take the things to the landfill. Is three times enough?” The list of the most commonly used orchard chemicals includes organic phosphates, “some of the most toxic substances known” which in high concentrations produce death from respiratory failure, said the member of Fairfax County’s hazardous materials response team.
