Camping programs at Virginia’s six district 4-H Education Centers served more than 15,000 4-H youth last summer. The various camps offered at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center at Front Royal during the summer of 1987 were attended by more than 3,000 campers. RappaJwiWfk*, .County sent. ^ campers to the Orange-MadisonRappahannock Junior Camp (ages 912) in August and 11 campers attended the district-wide Junior High Camp (ages 12-15) also held in August.
During July, 60 youth, ranging from age 6 to 12, attended Rappahannock 4-H Day Camp, this year held at the 4-H Center. In addition, 12 adult volunteers and 11 teen leaders helped with Junior Camp and Day Camp. Camp programs provide away-from-home group living experiences, emphasize outdoor learning activities, skill development, confidence building and constructive recreational activities.
Special programs are designed for different audiences. One project helps preteen children of working mothers learn how to take care of themselves safely after school. A teen program called “Wilderness Challenge” helps youths develop confidence in themselves and improve their ability to work as members of a team.
