If you need help, or have questions about specific fire prevention techniques, such as fire extinguishers or the proper installation of woodstoves, your local volunteer fire department would be happy to provide you with information. Likewise, the Rappahannock Building and Zoning office has information about proper instaUatign^focedures for wood heaters. The office will also inspect completed installations. ^
Electrical contractors can provide information about adequate circuit loads. That is an often-overlooked item. It's especially important during the winter, when most houses have more lights burning for a longer time — as well as portable electric heaters, electric blankets and other highwattage appliances. v -V
And, as was mentioned earlier, woodstove safety cannot be stressed enough. There are many houses in Rappahannock which heat with wood. Each chimney should be cleaned before the first fire of the season is built. Even if the chimney is clean, a nesting bird may have stuffed the chimney during the summer. At best you’ll end up with a house full of smoke; at worst you could have a bad chimney fire.
As winter approaches, traditionally the county’s fire departments have an increase in business — business which they would rather not have. The more people who actively participate in fire prevention, the less fires there will be. We’re sure that none of the county’s volunteer firefighters would complain if they got no business at all this winter.
