or publication of papers, a society spokesman explained. Mrs. Luke received the award at a ceremony in Dearborn, Michigan earlier this year. Mrs. Luke was also honored by the society with its Gardner Award in 1981, which recognizes outstanding leadership.
Mrs. Luke, a native of Brooklyn, has studied art at Rollins College, Southern Methodist University and American University. She began her art career in 1943 as head of the display department at a retail store in Florida.
In 1965, she joined Studio II Art School as a drawing and color instructor, accepting a position in 1968 with the Art League as a painting and color instructor.
Since 1971 she has owned Studio 231 in the F. T. Valley outside Sperryville, and continues to teach and give lectures on color. Her paintings have been shown in many galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian Institution.
