A Washington, D.C., man was charged with reckless driving after an accident Sunday evening on Route 211 west of Sperry ville.
According to Virginia State Police Trooper R. E. Keen, Hans Peter Brunner, 32, was eastbound in a 1986 Mercedes four-door. He was coming down the mountain from Thornton Gap in heavy traffic about 7:30 p.m. Trooper Keen said that, according to a number of witnesses in other cars which were passed by Brunner, he sped past at least 10 and possibly as many as 15 cars.
He slammed head-on into a 1967 Plymouth two-door driven by Clyde G. Bryant III, 19, oif Falls Church, who was headed west up the mountain on Route 211. Trooper Keen said that the witnesses told him that Brunner began to pass the other traffic on a double solid yellow line, which continued to the point where the collision occurred.
Brunner suffered a broken right ankle, and Mr. Bryant was hospitalized with a broken jaw, several broken teeth and facial lacerations. Trooper Keen said that Brunner was wearing a seat belt, and that his Mercedes was equipped with airbags. He did not know if Mr. Bryant was wearing a seat belt.
Brunner was charged by Trooper Keen with reckless driving, specifically passing on a solid yellow line.
Fire and rescue personnel from Sperryville and Washington responded to the accident, which tied up traffic from Washington, Va., to the top of the mountain at Thornton Gap.
