The Department of Forestry is now accepting orders for tree seedlings. The seedlings will not be delivered until next Spring’s planting season. However, now is the time to order seedlings to insure the species you want will be available. Every year we begin to sell out of some species around the end of December, according to Area Forester Buck Kline.
This year there are 12 different species of trees for sale. For the first time, there is also a Wildlife Package available. This package contains five black walnut, 10 common apple, 25 shrub lespedeza, 15 gray, silky, or red osier dogwood, five sawtooth oak, five Chinese chestnut, 10 bristly locust, and 25 Tatarian, Rem Red or Amur honeysuckle (bush type). The price for the Wildlife Package is $65.
The Department of Forestry seedlings can be planted for a variety of purposes such as timber production, erosion control, Christmas trees, sight and sound barriers, and improvement of wildlife habitat, Mr. Kline said. Prices range from $28 per 1,000 loblolly seedlings to $75 per 1,000 Norway spruce seedlings.
