To the editor:

On television about two weeks ago, while giving a speech to a seated audience in Seattle, George Bush was interrupted by an old man wearing a clerical collar who shouted, “What about the poor? What about the street people?”

As the police hustled the old man out, Mr. Bush laughingly said, “In my business you meet all kinds,” and the audience laughed with him. Later we were told the old man is a Jesuit priest.

The event made me apprehensive and sad: no “handlers” can be blamed or credited for this. I saw the “real” George Bush and his deft, persuasive appeal to our meanest instincts, making his earlier appeal of
