Here are little thumbnail sketches on some of the beef breeds which are most popular in this country:
Angus: A British breed originating in Scotland. Black in color, moderate in size, good in fleshy qualities and maternal abilities.
Hereford: The Hereford is a red, whitefaced breed originating in England and so is an English breed, moderate in size, very hardy and good in maternal qualities.
Polled Hereford: The genetically hornless variety <ff hereford developed frt the United States from a mutation is considered a British breed, is moderate in size, hardy and good in maternal characteristics.
Shorthorn: Developed in England. Is red, white or roan in coat color, a British breed, moderate in size, good maternal qualities.
Red Angus: Red in color; otherwise, same as black Angus.
Pinzguaer: A French mountain breed developed as a dual-purpose breed, moderately large, good milking and mothering qualities, came into this country in the 1970s.
Tarentaise: Another French mountain breed developed as dual purpose, moderately large size, good milk characteristics.
LimousinDeveloped in France, moderately large, heavily muscled, a meat breed, came into this country in the early 1970s, red in color, good for terminal crossing.
Charolais: A white French breed, large in size, came into this country in the 1960s. Excellent meat qualities, high cutability, good growth rate, good terminal crossbreed.
Simmental: Developed as a large dual-purpose breed in Switzerland. The most popular breed in Europe. Came into this country in the late 1960s. Coat color red, solid or red
