In the euphemisms of sports, it’s been a building year for the girls’ basketball program at Rappahannock County High School. Going into the last weeks of the season, the Panthers boasted only one win on the year, and languished in the basement of the Bull Run District.
But Coach Renee Dingus refused to give up. She kindled a fire in her young charges w hieh produced three straight victories against Warren County, Brentsville and Stonewall Jackson.
In two of those games, against Brentsville and Stonewall Jackson, Rappahannock tallied more than 60 points. Four different players ended up with scoring totals in double figures.
Earlier in the season. Coach Dingus had attributed the team's problems not to lack of scoring ability, but rather to just being outpointed by the opposition. After weeks of disappointment, the team finally hit its stride. Coach Dingus said.
O-T win against Warren
The victory Oct. 17 against Warren County boosted the Panther spirits as it also boosted the team's record above the Wildcats, who fell to 2-14. It was not without its moments, however, as Rappahannock required a three-minute overtime period to salvage the 43-40 victory.
The game was close during the first period, with the score tied at 10 at the buzzer. Rappahannock pulled ahead in the second quarter and went to the break with a 23-19 lead.
The Panthers lost their game, however, in the third quarter, and allowed Warren to pull ahead, aided by seven turnovers. Rappahannock tied the score twice but both times the Wildcats quickly upped the score, and at the end of the quarter they led 32-27.
