I thought that perhaps one of Virginia’s finest would come along, but there was not one in sight — not even hiding in the bushes waiting to catch a speeder.
Finally, I managed to cross the highway and tried to flag down a passing car. No luck there either, they just steadily zipped by, giving me the cold eye and probably thinking to themselves, “Tough luck, old girl.”
After about a half-hour spent flagging in vain, I had resigned myself to starting to walk to the nearest exit, when a small sports car slowed, pulled off onto the shoulder, stopped and backed up to where I was standing.
