Also available through the Health Department are pregnancy tests, TB tests, confidential AIDS screening as well as screening and treatment for other sexually-transmitted diseases, blood pressure checks and flu immunizations. “A lot of the services are free to everyone,” Manon noted, “and everything else is on a sliding scale, from full fee to nothing, depending upon income.”
And with all the services and programs comes counseling. “That’s the most important part of my job_ teaching,” Marion said, adding that the public health nurse’s primary goal is prevention. “We have all this free literature,” she said, waving her arm to indicate the racks and racks of folders that line the walls of her office in the Clopton House. “We have information on practically everything! And if we miss something here, we have access to all the state agencies so we can get the answer.”
She wants the people of Rappahannock to feel comfortable about using the Health Department’s services. Office manager Charlotte Freeman is another Rappahannock native, “and she has a wonderful rapport with our clients,” Marion said. “Charlotte knows all the children. In fact, most everybody who comes in here, we know. Either we went to school with their brother, or we recognize them from church.
“And if someone’s homebound and wants a flu shot or some other service, please let me know,” the public health nurse continued. “I really love home visits. That’s my favorite part of the job.
‘Everybody should feel real welcome up here,” Marion concluded. “And if we can’t help them, we can usually find someone who can.”
