Brentsville fella, 61-42
Despite an outstanding performance by Brentsville’s Kelly Murphy, the Panthers’ Donna Foster led her team past the Tigers on Oct. 18 by a score of 61-42. Murphy led the scoring with 33 points, but a team effort by Rappahannock, highlighted by Foster’s 21 points, made the difference in the outcome.
Playing in front of a fired-up home team in their new gym, the Panthers fired off six points in the first quarter before the visitors got anything through the hoop. Despite Murphy’s single-handed effort, which produced all 10 of Brentsville’s first-quarter points, Rappahannock led at the quarter, 12-10.
In the second quarter Rappahannock continued the attack and also stopped Murphy’s hot shot, opening up a halftime lead of 28-13.
However, in the third period Murphy got open again, scoring 16 in the stanza, followed by another six in the final quarter.
Meanwhile, Foster was kept busy trying to offset Murphy’s eye, contributing 11 points in the third period.
Joining Foster in double figures for the Panthers were Jackie Settle with 10 and Susie Dearing with 14. Dearing tallied 10 of those points in the fourth period.
“She’s terrific,” Coach Dingus said of the junior guard. She had praise for the entire team, noting that the game represented the first outing of the year when the team had played together.
