“Thanks to the support of the community,” assistant chief Richie Burke said, “we are able to upgrade our firefighting capabilities.” He was speaking of the recent purchase by the department of a 1975 Kenworth pumper/tanker from a fire department outside Chicago.
The truck has a diesel engine, automatic transmission and a covered rear compartment where additional firefighters can ride in full turnout gear. That compartment is fitted with self-contained breathing apparatus, which the volunteers can don en route to the scene.
