Eva Jonasson was crossing Europe by train in 1973 when she met Jim Wine, the American she would marry and whose poetry would later send her art in the new direction that led to this first solo show. “My paintings were watercolors of landscapes — very picky, very precise, very small. Then suddenly, I felt like playing! I put my canvas on the floor, and I was painting very big!”
“Play” is a word Mrs. Wine uses often when she talks about art but it’s not “play” in the standard sense. #Art is serious, very serious, the most serious thing there is,” she says. “The ideas (for the paintings in Tracks) have been growing in my mind for five years, but the part where the ideas came down on the canvas happened very fast. Maybe that’s the play part. I am trying to be freer, trying to go away from being picky.”
