The Library Board of Trustees first had architectural plans drawn for enlarging the present building in 1963, and in 1985 such a proposal was turned down by the county, Grace Sims responded. The cost of additional land in the town of Washington is prohibitive, she said. “We looked everywhere and we tried everything, so when we were offered two acres just outside of town, we were overjoyed to accept,” the trustee and former librarian told the planners. “It isn’t perfect, but it’s a wonderful spot.”
“I know what Phil is saying is in good will,” said trustee Mary Jamieson, acknowledging the support Mr. Irwin has given the library over the years. But his suggestions have already been investigated and found to be unworkable, she said, explaining that the building’s foundation will not hold the weight of an upstairs retrofitting. In addition, she noted, sending children and other library users upstairs could prove a problem.
