Harriers head to districts
The Rappahannock cross-country team competed in the Bull Run District meet on Oct. 26. Results were not available at press time. Coach Scott Mellott said he hoped that the team would finish as good as third, although a fourth place would be enough to ensure a berth to the regional meet in Charlottesville on Nov. 2.
Coach Mellott had praise for his team, which went to the tournament with a season record of 9-6. The Panthers lost their last outing of the season last week, a tri-meet against Stonewall Jackson and George Mason.
Coach Mellott said, “It’s been a very good season, especially considering the young team.” The top four runners on the team are either freshmen or sophmores “who have gained a lot of experience and confidence.”
With Matt Eidson, Steve Lillard, Vincent Grigsby and Jesse Reynolds all returning, “We are looking at at least two years of running as a very strong program at Rappahannock.”
Those four, Mr. Mellott added, are the four guys to look for in the coming season “and in the local 10K races.” He called the team “a very balanced attack,” noting that every member of the team had placed in the meets at least once.
Although Rappahannock did not field a girls’ cross-country team this season, Coach Mellott said he would like to organize one before next season. He urged any students interested in running, both boys and girls, to contact him at the high school.
