Haunting is the word for Tracks, Eva Jonasson Wine’s exhibition now at the Middle Street Gallery in Washington.
Her images of prints in the snow keep reappearing in memory. Remembered, the paintings raise nagging questions: Who or what made the tracks? Where are they coming from? Where are they going? What happened to the beings that left their marks in the snow?
The paintings are part of a larger work to be called Textures and Urtext, Mrs. Wine says. “It is after the way tracks make textures, the weave in and out, back and forth, creating a text which tells us what has been before,” she explains. Urtext is “the source, my roots, telling me about the past, my past and ours . . .For me it is a place called Vastansjo (west of the lake) in my homeland of Sweden. I am the fifth generation, mother to daughter, to come from that small village. The tracks my ancestors left are in and around that place. And they are also
