Chimney fires continue
Volunteer firefighters from Sperryville and Washington responded to yet another chimney fire last weekend, as the county's rash of such fires continues. Sperryville Fire Chief Greg Wayland theorized that the recent warm weather has led residents to burn their airtight woodstoves at a low setting, which does not completely burn the wood and causes creosote deposits to quickly build on the inside of chimneys. Chief Wayland suggested that any woodstove should be burned on high heat for at least 30 minutes twice a day — a procedure which will allow the fire to get hot enough to burn out much of the creosote buildup. "And don't forget to have the chimneys cleaned regularly," he added. "It's cheap fire insurance!"
