This year some are at the high school and some are being taught in Madison. The cost of teaching them all locally will be only a little more than the transportation and tuition costs of having them taught in Madison, Dr. Gangel told the board.
Other budget priorities are ex^ panding the teaching of Spanish from grade five to grades five and six, the electronic classroom (which will be used to teach Latin and Advanced Placement English), and remedial education for kindergarteners and first-graders. Remedial teaching currently begins with second-graders, but Dr. Gangel told the board remediation is most effective when it is started as early as possible.
Dr. Gangel said he also wants to offer an eight percent salary increase to all employees.
Another change for next year — which should not cost more money — is using the elementary computer lab now used for sixth-grade math for teaching keyboarding to fifthgraders. Finally, Dr. Gangel said, he would like to make whatever scheduling changes are necessary to guarantee duty-free lunch periods to all elementary school teachers.
