Homemade crackers were once a necessity instead of a luxury — in those years before any manufacturer discovered how to put on the “Ritz.” Crackers were known as unleavened bread, hard tack, wafers and biscuits back then. The term cracker came into use around the turn of the 19th century when W.R. Jacob and Co. of Dublin, Ireland, began sending crackers in airtight cartons around the world.
