Music competition Sunday
The annual Bland Music Competition, sponsored by the Rappahannock Lions Club, will be held Sunday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the RCHS auditorium. According to Mike Mahoney, who is organizing the event for the Lions, between 10 and 12 music students are expected to compete in the instrumental and vocal categories. The competition is open to any students in grades 7-12. Winners of the county contests will advance to district, regional and state competitions, where substantial scholarships will be awarded to the winners. Named for folk composer James Bland, the Lions Clubs of Virginia have sponsored the annual contest since 1948.
Seventh graders take SATt !> Eighty percent of the seventh grade class at Wakefield School participated in the Johns Hopkins University's "Talent Search '89," which seeks academically talented students. The students qualified by scoring at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized achievement test. Coutney Beeton, Oliver Culley, Bucky Dusek, Diana Fry, Austin Landry, Daniel Logie, Jamie Mayberry, John Mulligan, Michelle Paine, Trishka Parker, Alexandra Quincey and Eric Schlegel will take the Scholastic Aptitude Test, normally taken by high school juniors and seniors, to qualify for gifted and talented programs.
