With their backs against the wall, the Rappahannock Panthers put together four of their finest quarters of roundball in the opening round of the Bull Run District Tournament last Monday.
The Panthers also exacted a little revenge as they dismantled the Brentsville Cougars, 80-60. “We can’t afford any more lapses this time of the season. If we do, we go home, and then we can only think about what might have been,” said junior swingman Julian Groves.
With the win, RCHS sets the stage for what promises to be a classic confrontation against the number one-seeded Central Falcons Thursday night in the semifinals of the tournament at Frederick County Middle School.
The teams split in their regular season battle, each winning on its home court. The Panthers dealt Central its lone setback early in the season and the Falcons returned the favor in an emotional contest that Rappahannock has only recently recovered from.
Both teams had little trouble with their first-round opponents. Central began the opening round of the playoffs Monday night with a 101-70 win over the Clarke County Eagles. In the second game Rappahannock assumed control early in route to the 80-60 win over the Brentsville Tigers.
The Tigers had beaten RCHS earlier in the year, 71-64, by dictating the tempo of play. The Panthers wanted to make sure they didn’t make the same mistake and came out aggressively. The result was a 12-0 run to start the game.
Eric Dunn began the scoring spree with a three-pointer and Danny Ellis and Julian Groves each added two buckets for a 7-0 lead.
Dunn grabbed a missed Tiger shot and drove the length of the floor for a layup with a Brentsville player hanging on to his back. His conversion on the three-pointer gave the Panthers a 10-0 advantage. Five minutes into the game Kelly O’Dell scored the Tigers’ only basket of the quarter and RCHS enjoyed a 21-2
