and used a remote “beeper” to turn his answering machine off. He said that after he determined that the problem was not a mechanical malfunction inside the machine, he reported the incidents to the sheriff's department and requested that the telephone company put a tracing device on his line.
That trace determined that th,e calls which switched off the answering machine were made from Mr. Lane’s Woodville residence.
Mr. Lane was arrested on Feb. 2 and charged with the offense by Culpeper Sheriffs Department investigator David Carter.
Mr. Lane said Tuesday of the charge, “it’s in the process of being appealed. The entire affair has been blown way out of proportion.” He declined to comment further about the incident.
