There’s a group of people who serve the residents of this county, as well as the rest of the citizens of Virginia.
They are seldom thought of at all, and when they are recognized it is often because one of their number has been accused of wrongdoing, or because someone feels they have been unjustly accused of an infraction of the law.
Sometimes, as is the case this week, they are in the news because one of their members has been killed in the line of duty. We’re speaking, of course, of the Virginia State Police.
By all accounts, Trooper J. L. Hines was a distinguished law enforcement officer, commended 40 times during his 22year career with the Virginia State Police. On Monday night, that career ended in a violent and sudden death.
Trooper Hines was gunned down on Interstate 81 after stopping a car which had been reported stolen from Shenandoah County earlier that evening. His killer is in critical condition in a Roanoke hospital after a shootout with police in Salem, Va.
