Piedmont Virginia’s steeplechasers will visit Sperryville on Saturday, when the Rappahannock Hunt offers a full day of racing at its point-to-point March 4 in Sperryville.
Oliver Brown, co-chairman of the race committee, said Tuesday that the field is expected to be among the largest ever. So far, he said, the committee has received nearly 200 entries, including “26 or 28” for the pairs race and 141 for the field races. The field this year eclipses the event’s previous record of 131 entries in 1987, Mr. Brown said.
“The field is well-balanced throughout,” Mr. Brown said, and predicted that, depending on the weather, “at least several” of the nine races on the card will have to be split.
Mr. Brown said that he has received inquiries from across the state and elsewhere, including one jockey from South Carolina who plans to race Saturday.
