Three weeks ago the Rappahannock Panthers were oiling their gloves and thinking about the upcoming baseball season. They had just lost their third straight game and the future looked bleak.
But as of Friday, the baseball gloves are back on the shelves, and the Panthers are going to Crozet for Virginia’s Group A tournament, where they face Buffalo Gap on Wednesday night.
To qualify for the state playoffs, the Panthers had to win the Bull Run District Tournament, and they did it I by beating three of the commonwealth’s top 15 ballclubs. 7 Monday night’s first-round tournament contest was the de rigueuer curtain call given to all of the Bull Run District’s teams save the last place Manassas Park Cougars. Most critics were predicting a bomb by the boys from Rappahannock, but the underdog Panthers used this post-season opportunity to its fullest, and in the first encore they defeated the 15th-ranked Brentsville Cougars, 80-60.
