Coach Leake also praised the work of his defense. “By hustling back on defense the way we did, we probably eliminated 20 points for Central,” he said. “It was our best defensive effort of the season. Central runs a Georgetown-style offense and averages over 83 points a game. We limited them to 69, and only four of their players scored”.
Rappahannock got balanced scoring from its starters, ranging from eight for Groves to 25 for Dunn. They also got a big boost off the bench from Walters and Roy.
Panthers take Bull Run crown
“Our goal at the beginning of the year was a championship,” Coach Leake told the students at Rappahannock’s pep rally on Friday. “Tonight we bring home the gold.”
It wasn’t easy, but the coach, a former Panther star himself, delivered on his promise and the Panthers , won the school’s first district tournament by beating the Strasburg Rams, 56-52.
The Panthers were tentative on offense to start the game and trailed 10-3 after six minutes. But Eric Dunn brought his teammates back at the end of the first period with a strong move to the bucket to jnove within one point.
Neither team scored during the first two minutes of the second period. Dunn broke the drought for the Panthers’ first lead since the opening seconds of the game, making it 12-11. The advantage changed hands six times irt the second quarter but with under a minute remaining, Benji Roy put Rappahannock’s hand on top, 23-22. Eric Dunn added two on a breakaway jam and RCHS led 25-24 at intermission.
Doug Smith started the second half with his first two points, edging the Panthers in front 27-24. Then the Rams responded with a 7-1 run led by Charles Robinson and Strasburg’s hand was the one on top, 31Turn
