Five Rappahannock County students competed in the annual James A. Bland Music Contest, sponsored by the county’s Lions Club.
The contest awards three prizes in categories for instrumental presentation and vocalists. The winner in each category will advance to the district competition, where they face the winners from the other local contests.
This year, the vocal category7 was won by alto Angela Dawn Keys of Sperryville, a student at Rappahannock County High School. Miss Keys sang “Below in the Valley" by Johannes Brahms.
Wakefield student Kathryn Ruth Mahoney of Washington, a flutist, was awarded first place in the instrumental category for her rendition of “Tambourin’’ by Joseph Gossec.
Runners-up were Nicole Maeyer of Sperryville, from RCHS; Bonnie Luan Jewell of Castleton, also a student at RCHS; and Wakefield student Amy Rebecca Longyear of Washington.
Held in the Rappahannock County High School’s new auditorium last Sunday, the competition attracted a sizable audience of friends, family members, music fans and members of the county’s Lions Club and their families.
Judging the contest were two county residents, George Sims and Susan Hunt.
The students’ music teachers, Cathy Ashanky, David Orth and Bonnie Williams, helped their aspiring musicians select their material, prepare and rehearse for the competition, and in several instances accompanied the students on the piano.
